F.A.Q.
Mastering is the final process in a music production, aimed at enhancing the dynamics and overall sound of a song, always prioritizing the song’s intention. This process ensures homogeneity and consistency between songs, in addition to making them competitive with other tracks available in the market.
To ensure the best results, send me the stereo mix in WAV or AIFF format at 32-bit floating or 24-bit, with the sample rate at which the song was originally recorded and mixed. Regarding the peak level of the mix, it is crucial that it does not clip at 0 dBFS.
If you have any process in the master to make the mix sound louder, you can send me one file with the process activated and another file with the process in bypass. This way, I can compare and hear what you were hearing. You can also send me a screenshot of the processes you have on the master, so I can recreate them in the studio and use them as a starting point.
Additionally, if you need to master alternate mixes, it is important that you export the mixes from the same position to ensure the synchronization of both files and send them at the same time as the main mix to avoid additional charges.
The main mix is the one that, after being mastered, will be uploaded to platforms, published, and will be the one your listeners will normally hear. An alternate mix is a version where some elements of the main mix are muted for different purposes. For example, a solo artist might find it useful to have an instrumental version with background vocals for live performances if they do not have a support band. If you want more than one alternate mix, you will be charged 20% of the mastering fee for each one.
Below are some of the most common alternate mixes I receive.
TV Mix is a version of a song used mainly for television performances. This version includes all the elements of the original recording except the lead vocal. The goal is to allow the artist to sing live while the rest of the music plays as in the original recording, thus maintaining the sound quality of the live performance.
Live Mix is a version of a song designed for live performances. This mix may have certain elements adjusted or removed to better suit the live environment. For example, it may include backing tracks but generally leaves space for live instruments and vocals to stand out.
Instrumental version of a song includes only the music without any vocals. It is used for karaoke, performances where the singer performs the song live, or contexts where only the music is desired without the lyrics.
Typically, delivery times are between 2 to 3 days after receiving the files and confirming full payment for the project. I always try to have the master ready as soon as possible. However, if you need the master before this time frame, you can request an additional service to receive your master in less than 24 hours.
When it comes to mastering a full album, it is important to coordinate the delivery dates in advance to ensure the entire process goes smoothly. Mastering sessions are only scheduled once full payment has been received.
Once you have received and listened to your masters, you can request any adjustments related to the mastering process at no additional cost. Occasionally, mastering may highlight aspects of your mix that you wish to adjust. The mastering fee includes one change for an adjusted mix, provided the change is minimal.
If, upon reviewing the new mix, I consider that a master needs to be done from scratch, a new mastering fee will be charged. Therefore, it is very important that you are 100% satisfied with your mix before proceeding with mastering.
